#AtoZChallenge Day 16: Play by AKMU

P is for Play

P

Akdong Musician literally saved K-pop. And I’m not one to use that phrase often. I am convinced that Lee Chanhyuk is a musical genius. At the age of 17, he produced this entire album, writing and composing each song. Chanhyuk and his sister, Suhyun, have such amazing chemistry that is showcased so beautifully in this album. Male-female duets are rare in K-pop, and I have never heard such a perfect combination of voices before AKMU.

Every single song on their Play album is such a beautiful piece to listen to, so I really recommend listening to the entire thing. For this post however, I will narrow it down to my choice favorite songs on the album.

200%

This is one of AKMU’s funkier songs. Of all of the songs on this album, I think this is the most fun to sing along to. It is so cheerful and gives off such a happy feeling.

Melted

This is is hands down the best song on the album, and it is one of my personal favorite songs in all of K-pop. The melody is one that just draws you in and does not let go until the very end. The harmonization of Chanhyuk and Suhyun is so incredible.

안녕 (Hello)

Suhyun really shines in this one. Her voice is so delicate and beautiful. This is the song that could so easily lull one into a peaceful sleep. It is so soft and precious.

소재 (Idea)

This is the song that reminds me of the rest of K-pop. It is more upbeat than most of AKMU’s other songs. The beginning actually reminds me a lot of B1A4’s Beautiful Target. It is a whole lot of fun. It just blows me away at how easily Chanhyuk and Suhyun can adapt their voices to both exciting songs and lullabies, as well as everything in between.

They will be coming back with a new album this month, and then sadly AKMU will be taking a hiatus as a group while Chanhyuk completes his military service. Before he goes though, K-pop had better give proper acknowledgment to this revolutionary group. They have so much underrated talent and deserve so much love.

Question of the Day:

Are you a fan of AMKU? Any other song or videos by them you would recommend?
