IU “Friday” Music Video Review

This may be the first music video of IU that I actually really like. Keep reading to find out why!

It was pretty good. It was sweet and melodic. I liked the harmonizing between IU and Jang Yi Jeong. The “ La La La” was nice. It started off sounding a bit sad, but then picked up and was very cheerful in the end. It’s one of those songs that I wouldn’t necessarily listen to again, but was very pleasurable upon the first listen.

Score: 4/5

Video – Story

It was so cute but also really sad. IU is hanging out at home with Jang Yi Jeong and she gets a surprise text from her boyfriend who is waiting outside for her. The two of them go out, leaving Yi Jeong alone at home. IU and her boyfriend lovingly have a late night date while Yi Jeong watches longingly from outside. When it looks like the boyfriend is about to leave, Yi Jeong is about to talk to IU, but the boyfriend comes back and takes IU with him, leaving Yi Jeong alone again. It was the classic story of the girl falling for a guy and forgetting about her best friend. It fit the title of the song: the best friend is the one who stays with IU during the week, but the whole week she is just waiting until Friday when she can see her boyfriend.

Score: 4.5/5

Video – Cinematography

The single take was done perfectly. We were able to see a few completely different scenes without losing the fluidity of the video. It was timed perfectly so that we could see Jang Yi Jeong singing while still maintaining his character and keeping with the storyline. Even the camera angles gave the viewer at times the perspective of IU looking out the window and seeing who is waiting for her and at other times Yi Jeong longingly looking at the couple from a distance. The single take is not only an impressive accomplishment, but it actually enhanced the feel of the video, making it seem like everything is happening before Yi Jeong’s eyes and there is not a thing he can do about it. It was so entertaining and portrayed the story really well.

Score: 4.9/5

There were only three outfits to look at, and overall it was pretty good. Both men looked handsome in what they were wearing, but having the boyfriend wear a darker coat and Jang Yi Jeong more colorful clearly, but subtly showed the difference between the two men in IU’s eyes. The boyfriend is her tall, dark and handsome prince charming while Yi Jeong is her silly friend. IU herself looked really cute with her short hair and sweater. It didn’t seem very appropriate for going out in the winter, but it was still cute.

Score: 4/5

This video was perfect in making feel all sorts of emotions. I felt dull and disappointed in the beginning when IU looked bored, then excited when she sees her boyfriend outside the window. I felt sad for Jang Yi Jeong when IU left him behind. My heart was full of fuzzy warmth when IU and her boyfriend were acting all cute and lovey-dovey in the restaurant, then sad again for Yi Jeong when he saw them from outside. It was warm, heart-breaking, and sweet all in one video. Great job IU!

Overall Final Score: 4.4/5

This is my final review of 2013! I hope you all enjoyed! Over the next week I have a couple of things planned for this blog. First of all, I will be doing a countdown of what I thought were the top 50 music videos of the year. I also have a couple end of the year posts I want to make, so expect a lot from me as we come to the end of 2013. Thank you so much for sticking with me this year! If you celebrate anything this time of year, happy holidays! 🙂

Question of the Day:

Who did you sympathize with more in this video: IU, Jang Yi Jeong, or the boyfriend (whose name I don’t know)?
