EXO “Miracles in December” Music Video Review

I get chills listening to this song. Definitely one of my favorite K-pop winter songs.

It was so beautiful. The style of singing and control of each note was full of raw emotion and longing. The harmonizing was beautiful and the strong individual vocals were just chilling. I’m not a ballad person, but this song really spoke to me. I love how strong and prominent the vocals were in this song. The violins and piano didn’t overshadow the vocals, but added such a feeling of sadness to the song. (By my own personal preference though, I have to say that the Chinese version is better. The lyrics just sound smoother in Chinese.)

Score: 5/5

Video – Story

Each of the members are preparing something to give to their loved one. They all arrive in their town square on Christmas Eve to meet their loved one. Tao, using his power from “MAMA”, turns back time so that they can each meet with their past love. Apparently, they were all counting on Tao’s power to be able to rekindle their past loves, but they realize that the past is the past and it can’t be recreated, even with time control. It was sad in the end, especially the fact that Tao cried the most. It was like he was hoping the most that his power could fix everything, and when it doesn’t, the disappointment overwhelms him. It was difficult to pick out this story from the video since it didn’t appear to have any plot until the very end.

Score: 3.5/5

Video – Cinematography

This video was beautiful as it was, with all of the cold, white backgrounds and the snow. It was even more special to people who have been keeping up with EXO since their debut. They included the themes from “What Is Love” with the eclipse, and the powers from “MAMA” with Xiumin making it snow and Tao turning back time. It didn’t feel like a cheesy holiday video, but the way the scenes were set up, it did feel like Christmas.

Score: 4.5/5

The outfits also had a winter/Christmas feel. They were all wearing winter clothing, but it wasn’t like other K-pop videos where everyone wears a different type of pull-over sweater (like “The Day We Broke Up” by ZE:A Five). Some of them were wearing sweaters, some had jackets, and some had coats. They each had their own personality while still following the concept of the video. The only thing I didn’t like was Baekhyun and Chen in the singing scene. They were trying to look all fancy with the coat resting on the shoulders, but they are both already wearing a jacket underneath and it didn’t look as natural as the other outfits. Fancy is okay, but it has to look natural or else it just looks awkward.

Score: 4.5/5

Since it was a slower song, I can’t say I loved this video like I love other videos, but it was still really, really good. I just love how SM is creating their own story for EXO with each music video. They get powers (MAMA), they fall in love (Wolf), their powers take over causing them to lose the girl (Growl), then they try to use their powers to get the girl back (Miracles in December). I still don’t like how trolling the “Drama Episodes” are, but I have to give them props for being so creative with a group.

Overall Final Score: 4.4/5

Question of the Day:

This story could have been interpreted in many ways. You know how I interpreted it. What do you think the story was trying to say?
