JIN “Gone” Music Video Review

Another EXO member to try his hand at acting! Did he do better than Chanyeol?

It was hard to pick out a chorus and bridge and verses, which are useful in getting through the song. It was just a lot of singing. It was sung nicely, but her voice was a little too breathy and quiet at first. When the instruments picked up, it got better. It was good, but not very special or outstanding.

Score: 3/5

Video – Story

Xiumin is a piano student of Yoojung’s father. Xiumin finds out that she’s blind and helps her with her piano. They become friends, but her dad disapproves and has Xiumin dragged out of the house. Xiumin has a heart condition where he has to take pills, and keeps it a secret from Yoojung, but while he is dragged away, he drops the pills. One night, he sneaks into her house and plays a piano piece for her but has a heart attack and we assume that he dies from that. Yoojung is worried when the piano stops playing, so her dad finishes playing the piece, knowing that she would think it is Xiumin and feel relieved. The love story was sweet, as well as the love of the father in the end trying to protect his daughter’s heart. Xiumin’s acting was particularly good. It was a little difficult to figure out why he was there that night.

Score: 4.9/5

Video – Cinematography

It was beautiful – like watching a short film. The scenes were dramatic at the right moments and playful and fun in other moments. They kept it simple by having everything in the one house, which was good. I loved the scenes in the beginning of Xiumin staring at Yoojung, trying to figure her out, especially the one where they pass each other for the first time.

Score: 5/5

The school outfits were great in making them look like innocent lovers. The outfits when they were hanging out outside were also cute. I loved the dad’s look. He looked very proper and strict, but also artsy like a piano teacher. Xiumin’s night outfit was not great though. He reminded me of a pirate with the short, baggy shirt. It didn’t fit the style of the rest of the video’s wardrobe.

Score: 4.5/5

Overall Final Score: 4.4/5

So even though the song was not my taste, the video was beautiful. I loved Xiumin’s acting. He was the perfect curious student. I hope he gets to act in more productions.

For the rest of 2013 I am going to post mini reviews like this one instead of the long ones like I normally do so that I can get through as many videos as I can by the end of the year.

Question of the Day:

In the comments of the music video, I’ve seen a few people put forward their own interpretations of what really happens at the end of the story. What was your take on the ending? I’d love to hear other perspectives!
