Henry “1-4-3” Music Video Review

Song

This was a pretty good song. The melody was really fun and energetic throughout the whole song, and I found the lyrics to be great to sing along to.  It is one of those songs that just puts a smile on your face.  My favorite part was the instrumental bit right after the first chorus.  The instrumental throughout the whole thing kept the song from being a boring pop song and added flavor to the song. However, I thought Amber’s rap lacked the easy to follow rhythm of the rest of the song. Overall, it wasn’t epic or amazing, but it was pretty good.

Score: 4/5

Story

The concept of this video was so cute. Henry is just living his life when he gets a text from his girlfriend, Irene. It’s in some code he doesn’t understand, so he sends a text back in his own code, which she doesn’t understand. Finally he finds Irene and the two laugh and explain their texts to each other. I found this to be really easy to relate to. Everyone knows the confusion of getting a text and being unable to understand it. It was funny and very creative for a video. I’ve never seen a music video involve texting, and this one was pulled off in a very real and fun way. I also liked that Henry started out in the studio, making it seem like he is about to sing a song, when we the audience are actually going to see it being acted out. It was a simple story within a story, but creative and fun nonetheless.

Score: 4/5

Cinematography

I really liked the cinematography of this video. The story scenes all looked very realistic, as if Henry was actually in those places and not just on the set of a music video, but there was enough color to make each place look eye-popping and unique. The change of scenes helped move the story along and keep it interesting, yet they all still stuck with the same theme which was very good. I really like that the video started out in the studio and then popped out into the real world, although it would have been nice if there were more scenes of him in the studio, to keep that theme of singing the song in more than just the first few seconds. I loved everything about the dance scene, especially the lighting. It really gave that dance break such an epic look.

Score: 4.5/5

Wardrobe

I thought the wardrobe was great in this video! All of the outfits both looked good as well as followed the same theme. Even the dancing scene, which in a lot of videos has outfits totally unrelated to the story, was just a more elaborate version of the story outfits. They all gave Henry the vibe of a fun, young guy, which is exactly the role he was playing. It was a nice touch to have him wearing a sort of suit when he meets the girl as the climax scene of the video. I loved all of the shirts and hats. The white dancing outfit was my favorite, although they were all pretty good. I just have minor issues with his hair in a couple scenes (the suit scene and car scene), but overall it was very impressively good.  I just wonder if it was really necessary to have so many outfits in what seems like just one day in his character’s life.

Score: 4.5/5

Dance

(Note: This isn’t the official dance version, but it is an amazing cover.)

This dance was just so fun and energetic. I like that most of the main moves used the entire body instead of just the legs or just the arms. It really showcased Henry’s talent as a dancer, much more than “Trap” did. The chorus was perfect example of this. There were also many parts in the dance where the moves directly related to the song, like the clapping before each chorus and holding up three fingers during the “1-4-3” part. The best part, without a doubt, is the dance break after the first chorus. It was so fast, like that part of the song, and the movements were so complicated that it looked like it really took some skill to do. It was so entertaining. The second repetition of “I’m sending 1-4-3” with raising the arms was a little juvenile for him, but that was the only fault I could find in the dance. It was really well-done.

Score: 4/5

Overall, I was very happy with this music video. The song isn’t my type of song, but the cute video and great dance completely made up for it. This is also one of the few videos with such a large number of outfits where I actually liked all of them. Great job Henry! This was a really good debut.

Overall Final Score: 4.2/5

This is my 50th post on this blog! Thanks so much for reading, everyone! How appropriate that my 50th post would be about a member of Super Junior. I swear, that was only partially planned. 😉

Question of the Day:

What did you think of Henry’s debut as a whole?
